Profile: Jamie undertook his specialist training at the Edinburgh Trauma unit. During this time, he developed a clinical and research interest in trauma and upper limb surgery. Jamie completed his PhD in clavicle fractures which received the prestigious RCSEd Syme Medal and served as a clinical teaching fellow for the University of Edinburgh during his surgical training.

He completed advanced fellowship training as the Complex Trauma Fellow at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia. During this year he gained expertise in major trauma reconstruction and upper limb surgery of the hand, elbow and shoulder in a tertiary centre of excellence.

Jamie has undertaken additional short fellowships to further his specialist upper limb practice with the Sydney Shoulder Specialists and University of Chicago Medicine Hospital. He is an honorary member of the South Australian hand society and a member of British Elbow Surgeon Society.

As part of his NHS practice, he manages difficult acute and old injuries of the upper and lower limb. His elective work encompasses arthroplasty and soft tissue reconstruction of the upper limb. He also has a clinical and academic interest in nonunion and post -trauma conditions affecting the upper limb.

Profile: Mr Amin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1999. He trained in Edinburgh and Melbourne, completing three specialist fellowships in knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery and joint replacement. His special clinical interest areas are lower limb trauma and reconstructive surgery of the Knee, Ankle and Foot. Mr Amin was awarded a PhD by the University of Edinburgh in 2011 for his work on articular cartilage. He was appointed as a National Research Scotland (NRS) Clinician in 2015. He is an educational and clinical supervisor for the South-East Scotland orthopaedic surgical training programme. He is an examiner for the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.

Mr Arthur was appointed as a Consultant in 2014, having completed his orthopaedic training in Edinburgh and the Exeter Knee Fellowship. He has an special interest in Major Trauma and soft tissue knee reconstruction. Mr Arthur is currently the Orthopaedic lead for Trauma.

Mr Arthur retired from full active service in the Royal Navy in 2021 following a 21 year career. He has experience in dealing with complex battlefield injuries and has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He has extensive leadership experience from his time in the Royal Navy, most recently he served as the Clinical Director of the Commando Forward Surgical Group, who provide Surgical Support to the Royal Marines.

Profile: Miss Baird is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, with an interest in trauma, and the paediatric hip and foot. Miss Baird trained in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and undertook a Fellowship at the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, Canada. 

She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Edinburgh University, the Undergraduate Education Lead for the hospital, the Chair of the Education Committee of the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery and is the Head of Education for the South East Scotland orthopaedic trainee programme. 

She is passionate about providing excellent care to her patients and support to their families, promoting and widening access to medicine and orthopaedics, and mentoring and supervising undergraduates and trainee surgeons.

Mr Brown has a keen interest in mainly shoulder trauma and elective work performing arthroscopic surgery and arthroplasty (replacements). Anatomical and reverse shoulder replacements are performed.

He has developed the treatment of shoulder pain conjunction with pain clinic resources. He also does general trauma as part of the on call service provided at RIE.

Mr Clement graduated from the University of Newcastle and trained in his hometown of Sunderland before undertaking specialist training in the Southeast of Scotland. During his training he obtained a PhD for his work on patient factors influencing the outcome of total knee arthroplasty and a MD for his work on outcomes of elderly and super-elderly fractures.

Mr Clement is now a Consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with an interest in lower limb arthroplasty and hip fracture care. He is the author of over 250 publications and several book chapters and believes that only through collaboration can orthopaedic science progress.

In his limited spare time Mr Clement enjoys spending time with his family and his twin girls Rosie and Abigail, playing golf, and travelling.

Profile: Mr Andrew Duckworth is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and an Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.  Following completion of his training in Edinburgh, he was an Upper Limb Fellow at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit.  His clinical interests are in trauma and upper limb surgery, with a focus on injuries around the elbow, wrist and hand.  His current research includes clinical trials in orthopaedic trauma, large data and patient reported outcome measures.  He is a Co-CI and PI/co-app on NIHR funded clinical trials.  He is an Editorial Board Member for the Bone and Joint Journal (BJJ) and Bone & Joint³⁶⁰, and is a co-director of the world-renowned Edinburgh International Trauma Symposium.

Profile: Mr Gaston is a University of Edinburgh Medical Graduate who undertook Orthopaedic Training in Oxford and Edinburgh and Specialist Fellowship Training in Brisbane and Edinburgh. Appointed as a Consultant at the RIE in 2004, he is also Honorary Reader in Orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh.

Profile: Mr Mackenzie graduated from the University of Edinburgh before undertaking speciality surgical training at the Royal infirmary of Edinburgh. He undertook fellowships in Glasgow and Sydney specialising in shoulder surgery before being appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon at the RIE. His area of specialist interest lies in the management of sporting, traumatic and degenerative conditions of the shoulder, although he commonly treats a variety of traumatic conditions affecting both the upper and lower limbs.

Mr Mackenzie has a post graduate research degree from the University of Edinburgh and continues to be involved in projects and publications that a focus on patient outcome.  Mr Mackenzie particularly enjoys teaching orthopaedic trainees with a focus on the development of surgical technique.

Mr Macpherson was appointed as a consultant in 2014, having completed his orthopaedic training in Edinburgh and a fellowship in Sydney, Australia. His area of specialist interest includes hip and knee replacement as well as revision surgery. Mr Macpherson also undertakes computer assisted surgery and robotic-arm assisted surgery to try and achieve the best outcomes for patients. He has a strong research interest and has published many papers in his area of expertise.

Mr Macpherson is currently the Clinical Director of the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in NHS Lothian and sits on a number of national committees for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Scotland. He is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at The University of Edinburgh. He co-ordinates the fellowship programme in Edinburgh for surgeons from overseas wishing to further their training in hip and knee surgery

Profile: Mr McKinley graduated from University of Dundee and completed his orthopaedic training in Edinburgh, with a fellowship in Melbourne in 2005. He was was appointed as a Consultant in Edinburgh in 2007 as an elective foot and ankle surgeon and also treats paediatric trauma . He is the clinical lead for foot and ankle services in Edinburgh and has been heavily involved in developing foot and ankle services in Scotland. 

He is regularly involved in educating surgeons and allied health professionals and helped set up a national multidisciplinary foot and ankle group. He set up the ChM in trauma and orthopaedic surgery -a surgical distance learning program resulting from the collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is the program director. 

He deals with all aspects of elective foot and ankle pathology from bunions to ankle replacements, but has a particular interest in sporting injuries

Profile: Mr Molyneux graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2002. He completed his basic surgical training in the North East of England and moved to Edinburgh for his higher specialist training. At the end of his training he spent a year long specialist training fellowship in Vancouver, Canada, before returning to Edinburgh in July 2013 to take up a consultant post in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He is the Training Programme Director for Orthopaedics in South East Scotland, co-director of the world-renowned Edinburgh International Trauma Symposium, and Treasurer for ARTOF, the Association for the Rational Treatment of Fractures.

Mr Moran was appointed as a Consultant in 2008, having completed training in Edinburgh and Fellowship in Sydney. He is currently Chair of the Scottish Arthroplasty Project, a National audit that examines the outcomes of joint replacement surgery. He sits on a number of National committees for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Scotland.

Along with his colleague Mr John McKinlay he is a programme director for a Masters programme in Orthopaedic Surgery, run through the University of Edinburgh and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (ChM Orthopaedic Surgery). Mr Moran has previously organised the teaching programme for SE Scotland trainees and was a course director for ATLS. He continues to take an active interest in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education. His research interests are focused around his areas of specialist interest.

Profile:  Mr Murray is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Edinburgh Orthopaedics/Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Edinburgh.  He specialises sports injuries and joint preservation of the knee and hip.  He undertook ACGME accredited clinical fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at Stanford University where he served as Assistant Team Physician for the San Francisco 49ers NFL and Stanford Athletics.

Mr Murray is actively involved in research having undertaken PhD between UCLA Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center in California and at the MRC Scottish Centre of Regenerative Medicine. Mr Murray serves as Associate Editor at the Bone and Joint Journal (BJJ) and Bone and Joint research (BJR), and is a member of the International Society for Cellular Therapies (ISCT) musculoskeletal committee and the Biologics Association.

Having studied Medicine at Edinburgh University Mr Simpson undertook the vast majority of his post-graduate medical training in South East Scotland. He completed a fellowship in computer assisted hip and knee joint replacement in Brisbane Australia before taking up his current Consultant Orthopaedic Post in 2010.

During his time as a consultant, he has developed a specialist interest in complex hip and knee joint replacement surgery and also the use of computers/robots. He is passionate about passing on the experience and skills he has learned and has been heavily involved with teaching other surgeons at courses all over the world in conjunction with the orthopaedic industry.
