Undergraduate electives

Elective placements typically last between four and six weeks and aim to provide an overview of trauma, elective and clinical subspecialities. Students will be assigned to a variety of consultants during their placement, but will have flexibility to attend a variety of clinical activities with a range of consultants and resident doctors. It is open to final and penultimate year students. Students are both encouraged and welcome to attend local trainee teaching sessions, journal clubs and social events during their placement.

UK medical students: You are able to apply for a full clinical elective, which gives you the opportunity to scrub into cases. This would need to be organised via the Medical Education Team (see link below) and would cost £400. This must be arranged over 6 months in advance of attending.

International medical students: You are only able to apply for an observership and would not be able to be involved with exposure-prone procedures, including scrubbing into cases, due to hospital policy.

Space for electives is limited due to department capacity and our own medical students, so please contact us early to secure a spot.
